ANNUAL REPORT
2023-24
The Seven Hills School is a learning community with a mission to develop the intellect, engage the spirit, and foster respect for, and responsibility to, our world.
From the Head of School
Dear Seven Hills Community -
At every turn during a Seven Hills school day, our students find new ways to explore, discover, and engage with the world around them.
As I look back on the 2023-2024 school year, there’s so much to celebrate—significant growth, robust philanthropy, and a bright path ahead. Together, we achieved terrific participation in the Annual Fund with our new “ALL IN” theme, set new records (and had lots of fun!) at the MISSION: POSSIBLE Auction, and saw the highest level of engagement in years for the 8th Grade Class Gift. Over the last school year, your generosity to the Annual Fund and auction has directly contributed more than $1 million to our school’s daily operating budget.
Philanthropy is the backbone of any independent school, and last year’s fundraising achievements truly reflect our shared commitment to the students, program, faculty, and staff at Seven Hills. With your support, we’ve enriched our curriculum, expanded professional development for our teachers through Reader and Writer’s Workshops at Teacher’s College, added new string instruments for our performing arts classes, and provided students with more ways to connect with their passions through Lower School Curiosity Workshops and Middle School elective offerings. We’ve also broadened our program with new field trips and travel opportunities, enhanced our offerings in performing arts, world languages, and technology, and strengthened our social-emotional skill-building and wellness programs.
Looking ahead, we are excited to continue the next chapter of the Seven Hills story through the efforts of our capital campaign. Inspired by the generosity of those who came before us and guided by our strategic and campus planning, we are shaping the future of our learning village with plans to modernize our campus, increase access and affordability through our Modified Tuition program, grow our endowment for long-term financial sustainability, and further expand our program offerings. It’s an exhilarating time to be part of Seven Hills as we meet the needs of both today’s students and those to come.
Generosity has always been a defining feature of Seven Hills, and your partnership helps us empower students to imagine, create, explore, and lead with open minds and confidence. The success of this past year inspires us for what’s ahead in our fundraising efforts. Thank you for your belief in the long-term success of our school and for supporting the vibrant, enriching experiences we offer our students today. Together, we make Seven Hills a truly special place.
With heartfelt gratitude for your generous spirit,
Kathleen McNamara
Head of School

2023-24 Community Life
Oh, The Places They'll Go!

Class of 2024 Takes Their Place as Graduates
Under bright blue skies, parents, faculty, staff, and guests gathered to celebrate The Seven Hills School's 61st graduation ceremony. The event offered graduates a moment of reflection as they bid farewell to the familiar faces who had shaped their academic journey and looked ahead with excitement to the new opportunities awaiting them in high school.
"As we prepare to embark on the next chapter of our lives, I hope that we can carry the lessons we’ve learned, the friendships we’ve made, and the memories we’ve shared. Let us continue to approach the future with optimism, courage, and a commitment to making a positive impact on the world around us."

From the Board Chair
Last June, my spouse Jay and I celebrated an important milestone as our oldest child, Claire, graduated with her classmates from the 8th grade. Her final year at Seven Hills—from the enriching experience at Ashland’s Shakespeare Festival to the much-anticipated 8th grade position paper—offered us a first-hand reminder of the depth and richness of our programs. We were also fortunate to host Natsumi, our Japanese exchange student, and later, Claire and her classmates embarked on a life-changing journey to Japan in February. Witnessing the profound impact of the school’s Japanese exchange program on Claire and our family has left a lasting impression on us all.
As we enter our tenth year at Seven Hills, and I begin my second year as Board Chair, I feel immense gratitude to be part of a community that fosters such a deep love for learning. In collaboration with our Head of School, Kathleen, my first year in this role has provided me with new perspectives on our school's strengths and the exciting vision for its future. As stewards of the school’s mission and resources, we remain committed to upholding our fiduciary duties across all areas of our work. This year, the Board of Trustees has been dedicated to refining our best practices and enhancing the efficiency of each committee. Additionally, the Board has made significant strides in campus master planning to align Lower School buildings with the rest of campus, and continued to lay the groundwork to further a sense of belonging for all within our community.
I am deeply grateful to the members of the Board for their unwavering commitment to the school’s mission. Their tireless work, combined with their expertise and forward-thinking approach, ensures that we continue to thrive as a leading independent school in the 21st century. I am equally inspired by and thankful for the entire Seven Hills community. As you read the Annual Report that follows, I encourage you to reflect on your own family’s journey, knowing that your generous support—whether through gifts, time, or shared wisdom—continues to fuel the transformational programs that define our school. Thank you to every parent, grandparent, alumnus, alumni parent, and employee who contributed to the school in 2023-24.
Here’s to another remarkable year at Seven Hills!
Warmly,
Julie Meissner

2023-24 Financials
Seven Hills is committed to investing in and enhancing the student experience while keeping tuition as low as possible. The Board of Trustees sets tuition annually and oversees the school’s finances with the dual goals of supporting mission-driven growth and promoting fiscal strength.
The overall operating budget in 2023-24 was $15 million. Faculty and staff salaries and benefits continued to account for more than 70 percent of the overall operating expenses, while tuition provided nearly 80 percent of the overall operating revenue. Philanthropic support of the Annual Fund and auction combined was the third largest source of operating revenue.
These numbers reflect pre-audited financials. Audit will be available upon request as of January 2025.

ENDOWMENT AND MAJOR GIFTS
Growing the Seven Hills endowment is one of the most impactful investments we can take to ensure the school’s long-term financial stability. Now exceeding $7 million, the endowment contributed over $300,000 to last year’s operating budget, helping to reduce our dependence on tuition and other revenue sources.
The endowment has grown steadily over the past year thanks to the continued generous support of Seven Hills families. Spearheaded by graduating parents Ben Winig and Mala Subramanian, the Class of 2024 came together to raise essential funds in honor of the dedicated faculty who shaped their children's lives. With more than 60% of families participating, this marks the highest parent participation from any graduating grade in recent years. A plaque bearing the names of each class member will soon be hanging on the Seven Hills Endowment Wall.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to the many families whose contributions are helping to build an enduring legacy for future generations of Seven Hills students.

Mission Accomplished at the
Seven Hills Auction
Mission: POSSIBLE—codename for the 2024 Seven Hills Auction—was a smashing success, thanks to our secret agents of families, friends, faculty, and staff. Their mission, should they choose to accept it, was to assemble on Saturday, April 6, at 5:00pm for an evening of mystery, camaraderie, dining, libations, and thrilling bidding—all in support of our students, faculty, and programs.
The covert operation commenced with an online silent auction that kept everyone on their toes throughout the weekend, and on Saturday evening, guests donned their best spy-inspired outfits, ready for an evening of espionage. The Lower School blacktop served as the perfect setting for a clandestine outdoor cocktail reception before guests made their way to Hunt Hall Headquarters, where the gym had been transformed into an elegant and mysterious rendezvous point.
Following an exhilarating opening act by faculty and staff, the evening continued with sumptuous cuisine, drinks, discreet photo ops, and strategic mingling—all set to the melodious tunes of a string quartet. Seven Hills parent Kwesi Graves energized the crowd as the evening's MC, while auctioneer Sharon Mor expertly led the live auction and Raise the Paddle giving, igniting spirited bidding to support the future of Seven Hills. The excitement didn't end with the bidding; the LED dance floor and live DJ kept the energy high during the covert afterparty.
The most significant achievement of the night was the record-breaking $335,000 net raised for our mission-driven students, faculty, and programs, including an inspiring $111,600 during the community-driven Raise the Paddle!
A huge thank you to our dedicated operatives—parents, guardians, friends, and employees—who contributed to the event's success, from item procurement, decorations, and promotions to the incredible silent and live auction item donations, enthusiastic bidding, and business and faculty sponsorships. We appreciate everyone who volunteered countless hours, sponsored the event, entered the raffle, donated items, and raised their paddles for Seven Hills. #MissionComplete

THE CAMPAIGN FOR SEVEN HILLS
Reimagine | Elevate | Discover
We are proud to share an update about our ongoing capital campaign, The Campaign for Seven Hills, and introduce our efforts to our broader community. This ambitious initiative is focused on raising funds for the new, much-needed Lower School building, expanding student programs across all divisions, supporting Modified Tuition, and bolstering our endowment. We are enthusiastic about what this Campaign will bring to the future Seven Hills: a new Big Red, complete with a K-5 Imagination Lab and four bright, modern classrooms; enhanced programs that allow Seven Hills to continually innovate and enrich the educational experience; expanded access and affordability through Modified Tuition grants; and future financial stability supported by a robust endowment.
We recognize our leadership donors who have helped us raise more than half our $8.5 million goal. Our volunteer committee is excited to invite members of our community to learn more about this important initiative and join us in our efforts to Reimagine, Elevate, and Discover the Seven Hills of the future.
